'Miss Monica is amazing and so good with our 17 month old! He is learning so much and gets so excited to have lessons every time she comes over! They already have a special bond and it's so fun to watch him learn!' -Melissa M

'We've only had three classes with Carin so far, and I already feel incredibly lucky to have her as my kids' swim instructor. She's been teaching both my 2-year-old and 4-year-old, and I'm genuinely amazed at how much progress they've made in such a short amount of time. Carin is warm, patient, and incredibly skilled. She knows how to connect with young children in a way that makes them feel safe, confident, and excited to learn. My kids went from being hesitant around the water to actually looking forward to their lessons--and that's entirely because of her. To be completely honest, I've found the overall experience with Sunsational Swim School to be disappointing. Communication and scheduling have been frustrating, and the support from the company itself has been lacking. But Carin more than makes up for all of it. She's the reason we're sticking with the program, and the only reason I'm giving a 5-star review is because of her. If you're lucky enough to get Carin as your instructor, know that your kids will be in the very best hands!!!'

Our swim instructor, Emmy, is doing a great job with my two and one half year old grandson. First day started out with a lot of crying. By the fifth day he was holding his breath and grabbing toys under water and kicking and pulling himself out of the pool. Emmy has done a great job considering his age, attention span and he is only learning how to talk and is hard to understand.

Colin is a FANTASTIC swim instructor and we are so grateful to have worked with him. We started off with Sunsational with a not so great instructor experience and decided to pause until the next summer, when we were luckily matched with Colin. He was consistently early to our lesson time, brought fun toys that engaged our toddler, and Colin was great at trying different techniques when there were moments of toddler-resistance. Our son always looked forward to his lesson and was excited to see Colin every time. We highly recommend him!

Michelle W.

My 3 year old used to hate water in her face and often giving baths would lead to her crying. Nicole has been so kind and gentle with teaching her how to swim. Lila is more confident in the water now and she's learning that she can hold her breath in the water for longer. Nicole has made swimming fun, challenging, and has truly helped our daughter feel confident and happy with swimming. We will truly miss Nicole when the lessons are done! Nicole has been so easy to work with. She is so professional with being on time every time we have lessons. She is also good with rescheduling times for lessons. We are so glad Nicole is Lila's teacher! She has made this whole experience well worth it for us! We highly recommend her!

Connie has been such an incredible swim instructor for my 2 year old son. He adores her, and in a few short weeks he's well on his way to becoming a wonderful swimmer!

'Our daughter started at newly 2 years old, and is more of a cautious observant temperament. Brissy was patient and creative at getting her comfortable with her and the water. She has developed a lot of confidence, comfort, and some introductory/ safety skills. Looking forward to warmer months in the spring to start back up.' -Emilie W

Emilie W.

'Brissy is the absolute BEST! She was incredibly patient with my 2 & 4.5 year old, who weren't very excited to start swim lessons. By the end of the final lesson, my 4.5 year old was jumping in & swimming to Brissy with a smile on her face! And the 2 year old is excited to keep working on it :) -Lizzie D

Brissy is amazing!! Both our kids (2 yr old and 1 yr old) love her and have learned so much in the short amount of time we've had lessons. She brings lots of toys during our lessons which really helps the kids stay interactive and enjoy their lessons.

'Monica has formed such a great bond with our granddaughter and she is progressing nicely in her swim lessons and pool safety knowledge. We love Monica!'

Kristin is great! We have two little ones, ages 3 and 1. She's firm when she needs to be, encouraging when it's called for, and pulls back when necessary. Kristin knows how to engage children in the lesson to work on appropriate skills.

'James, our instructor, was fantastic. My daughter was very anxious about the pool and new people, but James became one of her favorite people. And, I saw dramatic improvement in her swimming!'

Doreen is fantastic. Our little swimmer just loves her and loves his time in the pool. He's progressing well and his confidence has soared. His lessons are twice a week - but he asks us daily if he can go 'have fun with Doreen' ... thank you!

Debi C.

I could not be happier with our instructor, Kris. She is fantastic! She has been very patient and flexible with our appointment times as well as patient with my new swimmers. Progress is happening very slowly but I can't wait until they have their breakout moment which I feel is coming very soon! Thank you Sunsational for finding the right instructor for our swimming needs. Thanks again!

We love Kristin as our swim teacher for our 16th month old son.. She's patient, kind and very easy to work with! Our son is halfway through his summer lessons (total of 20 classes) and has already tried jumping in the water by himself, can hold his breath for longer then just a dunk underwater and is becoming much more comfortable in the water overall!

Kristin is a wonderful teacher. She is so patient and kind with our 2 year old & he has made so much progress in just 3 weeks of lessons with her. Thank you, Kristin!

Rebeka is so incredible, I am extremely happy with the swim lessons she provides! She makes my daughter feel so comfortable, brining fun water toys each time she meets with us. Rebeka is always smiling and ensures everyone is comfortable, even the parents! Highly highly recommend her.

Melanie is they absolute best. We have a non verbal 2 year old as well as a chatterbox 4yr old. My two year old tries to cry the entire time, but keeps getting distracted by Melanie's tactics! My 4 yr old on the other hand wishes he had lessons 7 days a week! We tried aqua-tots before and both my kids hated it. My oldest started out hating any water on his face but after 8 lessons he can swim under water from one side of the pool to the other! He excitedly told me that 'he was a big fish because he can see underwater!' The transformation in his confidence and self worth is unbelievable. While at Aqua-tots I had to force them into the water. Now I can't keep them out of it. I can't imaging having anyone other than Mrs. Melanie as our teacher! She is always respectful, polite, and understanding of each child's needs. Thank you, Melanie! We can't wait to schedule with you again next summer!

Seana M.

Keiyon tailored lessons to my sons personal needs. He was fun and enthusiastic even when my son was scared of the water.

Vanessa H.

Doreen was very patient And was great with our son.

5 reasons to start swim lessons for your baby now

Many Costa Mesa parents wonder if their baby is too young to start learning to swim. They think babies will eventually learn the skills on their own, or that the skill isn’t necessary. Here’s why starting lessons early is a smart choice:

Water safety starts early

Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children under four. Babies are naturally curious, which is why baby swimming lessons make so much sense. An awareness of the water, and water safety skills, could very well save your child’s life one day.

Decreased risk of drowning

It’s impossible to watch over your children every second. Most daycare facilities have pool or splash days during the summer or have field trips that include water fun. Children can drown in less than 1 inch of water, particularly if the person is under the age of 4. Swimming lessons help decrease the risk of drowning.

Encourages social interaction

Swimming and playing in the pool with parents and other babies helps boost babies' social development.  Babies learn through shared experiences, laughter, and engaging in activities together. Your child shouldn't have to skip these character-forming moments due to a fear of the water or because you simply haven't found the time for swim lessons.

Builds their strength

For babies, swimming helps strengthen their muscles, improve coordination, and enhance their motor skills – all without any unnecessary stress on joints. Plus, the water’s resistance provides a full-body workout, even for the tiniest of swimmers. Swimming may even help learn to walk sooner thanks to better muscle control.

Lifelong skill that starts early

Swimming is a skill for life. Providing your baby with swimming lessons opens up a whole new arena of fun and fitness that they can participate in all their lives. If you don't know how to swim, consider taking a parent and baby swim class together or taking adult swim lessons on your own. Create core memories in the water, together!

How parent and baby swim lessons help build confidence around the water

Babies as young as six months old benefit from pool time in the arms of a trusted adult. Infant swim lessons allow your child to enjoy the water before they have a chance to learn fear. Positive pool experiences help babies remain calm so they can progress to learn effective water navigation skills such as kicking and back floats.

How parent and baby swim lessons help image
75%of children who drown were out of sight for five minutes or less
9 out of 10drowning deaths occur while an adult is present

The benefits of swim lessons extend beyond the pool. The sensory and motor stimulation resulting from pool time creates new neurons that positively impact confidence and even intelligence. Bilateral movements, or using both sides of the body, help increase the connections between the two hemispheres of the brain, which will later help with skills like language development, spatial awareness and reading.

How to prepare your baby for swim lessons

Not ready for a formal class yet? Start at home! Simple activities in the bathtub, like gently pouring water over your baby’s head, introducing words like “kick” and “splash”, or laying them on their back in shallow water, can help them feel comfortable in the water before their first lesson.

When you’re ready for the pool, help your baby be successful with these tips:

  • 1
Feed them at least 30 minutes before a lesson to prevent tummy discomfort
  • 2
Pack essentials like swim diapers, towels, dry clothes, and fresh diapers
  • 3
Arrive early so you have time to get ready
  • 4
Ease into the water to keep the experience positive

Water safety is always the number one priority

Even the most comprehensive and successful water training program isn’t enough to drown-proof your child. Babies should always be within arm’s reach in the water, and children should never swim unsupervised. The goal of baby swimming lessons is to reduce the chance of accidental drowning, but it can’t guarantee to prevent it completely. Even if your little one was the star of the class, you should still be vigilant in your supervision to ensure that the water provides positive experiences for years to come.

I also have experience working with students who have special needs.

Got questions?

We have answers. What age can babies start swim lessons?

No. Sunsational Swim School’s infant swim lessons are based on a child-centered and caring approach that focuses on building trust and rapport with the instructor and wonderment and respect of the water. When designing your baby’s swim lesson plan, our instructors consider all aspects of the well-being of your baby, including physical and emotional. Your swim instructor will create a safe environment for your baby to learn water-safety skills that include back floating, roll over breathing, “swim-float-swim”, the monkey crawl, and what to do after a fall into the pool. All of these skills are taught in a way that’s both fun and educational, using games, repetition, and even songs, at a pace that’s healthy for your little one.

Yes! Sunsational specializes in private, at-home baby swimming lessons, where our instructors come directly to your pool or community facility in Costa Mesa. It’s the easiest way for your baby to learn in a calm, familiar setting.

We make scheduling easy. Morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend lessons are avaialble 6AM-8PM to fit your family’s lifestyle. You choose the days, times and number of lessons per week that works for you. Because all lessons are private, scheduling is completely flexible and can be adjusted for vacations or weather. In Costa Mesa, our instructors teach year-round, so you can start lessons whenever you’re ready.

Every child is unique and develops at their own pace. Physical and emotional readiness, motor skills and willingness all play a role in the pace your baby learns. However, the most common and most influential factors in the student’s learning pace we find is repetition and consistency. We recommend our baby students take 3 lessons per week for maximum skill retention and fast progression. Most of our students make significant progress within 12 to 18 lessons in our baby swim classes.

Yes. Swimming is not only defined as the four major swim strokes, but the ability to propel through the water. Your baby can learn how to use their little limbs, breathing and sense of direction to deliberately move from point a to b in the water, once they start walking. These skill sets are learned in a progressive manner and each child learns at a different pace. Our infant swim lesson teachers are experienced in coaching your baby to learn these skills in a fun, encouraging, and accelerated way. Even if your baby is not ready to swim, we'll work on swim and safety skills like blowing bubbles (breath control), kicking, rolling over onto our back and floating.

Your baby’s first swim lesson is designed to be gentle, fun, and completely pressure-free. The goal isn’t to make your baby swim right away—it’s to help them feel safe, happy, and relaxed in the water. Tears on the first day are not unexpected!

Your Sunsational instructor will start by introducing your baby to the pool gradually: gentle splashing, floating with support, and playful water exploration. Parents or caregivers are always encouraged to be present.

Most Costa Mesa parents begin lessons around 6 months old, when babies can comfortably hold their heads up and start exploring the water. Babies who have early exposure to swim lessons and the water are proven to have reduced anxieties and emotional obstacles learning how to swim. The water at this age is a familiar place as it’s similar to floating in the womb. Sunsational’s certified instructors offer private, at-home baby swimming lessons throughout Orange County, helping your little one feel confident and safe early on.

Absolutely. Every Sunsational instructor in Costa Mesa is certified in CPR and insured under our company liability insurance policy. What's more, every Sunsational swim instructor has a minimum of 2 season's of teaching experience. We emphasize comfort, floating, and water awareness—always at your baby’s pace.

Every child learns differently, but with consistent, one-on-one instruction, most Costa Mesa infants begin floating and showing swim readiness within our 12 or 18 lesson package. Sunsational’s personalized approach—taught in your own pool—helps babies progress faster than in group lessons. We find that the most common and most influential factors in the student’s learning pace are repetition and consistency. To that end, we recommend our baby students take 3 lessons per week for maximum skill retention and fast progression.

For baby and some toddler lessons, parent participation is encouraged for building water comfort. For older children (typically ages 2+), parents are not specifically encouraged to be in the water, as our one-on-one private instruction is designed to build independence. However, we always require a responsible adult to be present on the premises for all lessons with minors. If you have specific preferences or concerns, our team is happy to accommodate them in your registration. We tailor each lesson to your comfort and goals.
