Toddler Swim Lessons

If you're the proud parent (or grandparent) of a toddler, you know very well how curious they can be, and how quickly they can get themselves into trouble! One of the biggest preventable threats to children ages 1-4 is drowning. Fortunately, research shows that a toddler who participates in swim lessons reduces his risk by 88%. Children of any age can quickly benefit from learning the skills that will keep them safe in and around water, from the bathtub in their home to the community pool.
What makes our toddler swim lessons different?
At Sunsational Swim School, we create a supportive environment that combines safety skills with swim techniques that are age-appropriate. Young children learn best through play, so our instructors make their swim lessons toddlers challenging and fun through creative games and toys.

Toddlers also need one-on-one instruction to be safe during swimming lessons, which is why our private swim lessons consist of a class of one: your child! Our instructors progress at the child's pace, focusing on the gradual development of skills reinforced with positive feedback and encouragement. Your toddler will learn important water safety and foundational swimming skills in a progressive manner.

What Are Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) or Survival Float Lessons?

We are often asked about Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) lessons and whether we teach infant survival float or self-rescue techniques. At Sunsational Swim School, we share the same fundamental goal as ISR: to equip children with the essential skills to be safe in and around water. However, our path to achieving this goal does not align with the ISR philosophy.
ISR is a program that teaches infants and young children "self-rescue" swimming skills with various methods based on the child's age. For instance, ISR curriculum often employs a method called "forced back floating," where an instructor will repeatedly push the child underwater to trigger a reflex that causes the child to roll onto their back and float. While learning to float is a positive and important goal, this experience can lead to negative associations with water, hindering their enjoyment of swimming and overall development of water confidence. Moreover, industry experts have yet to prove that the ISR method is a more effective teaching approach.
We believe that children should develop skills that not only allow them to float but also enable them to move to safety as confident and efficient swimmers. A correct and efficient swim stroke is essential for navigating out of potentially dangerous situations. What's more, we believe these skills should be taught while creating a positive, enjoyed relationship with the water.
Our experienced instructors understand the importance of gentle encouragement and positive reinforcement to teach essential water safety skills. We believe that a child who enjoys swimming is more likely to become a strong and confident swimmer in the long run.
We encourage parents to research various swim programs and choose one that aligns with their child's individual needs and temperament. At Sunsational Swim School, we are committed to building a foundation of water confidence and lifelong enjoyment of swimming for every child.

Benefits of Swim Lessons for Toddlers

IMPROVED CONFIDENCE

The best way to prevent fear of the water is early exposure. As your child learns to hold onto the side independently and later move through the water on his own, his confidence will grow significantly

BETTER COORDINATION

The techniques used in swim lessons for young children, such as swimming with toys, improves both gross motor skills and coordination. According to a study performed by the University of Science and Technonology in Norway, infants and young children who swim demonstrate higher levels of balance and ability to grasp objects than their non-swimming peers.

EARLIER ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTOMES

Research shown that toddlers who participate in swim lessons demonstrate advanced development compared with their peers.

OVERALL WATER SAFETY

Knowing how to get to the side of a pool, hold on to a floating object, or swim is the number one way to prevent the main cause of accidental death for children under the age of 5: drowning. For this reason, toddler swim lessons with Sunsational Swim School incorporate those critical safety skills from the very begining

We had James for swimming lessons, and I cannot say enough good things about him. He was prompt every single day for our 4 weeks of lessons, absolutely engaged during the lesson, and knew how to manage the different personalities of children. One of our son's classmates took right after our son's lesson ended each day, and she has a very different learning style from our son, and James catered to both incredibly well. If you choose to take lessons from Sunsational, request James. We had a NOT great experience with an instructor before this, and having James was a 180 in every way. Our kids STILL ask about James and when they'll get to go swimming with him again.

Our instructor Miss Shelley was amazing! She was so great with my son and his little cousin and before we knew it both of the kiddos were actually swimming across the pool - neither had done so before and were scared of putting their heads underwater until she showed up. She's amazing with kids and brings so much expertise to the pool. We will definitely sign up for more lessons with her next summer!

Abbie was absolutely amazing. Beyond my expectations. Before we started working together, I could barely make it halfway down the pool. Now I can swim the entire length. As an adult, learning to swim can bring a lot of anxieties, but Abbie was patient and her experience and expertise made learning to swim fun and easy

Sunsational matched my four boys with James, one of the most fantastic swim instructors they've had! He's always encouraging, both to support my youngest's introduction to the water, and to push my older boys to try harder and swim faster. My oldest three are on the local swim team now and consistently snag first or second finishes, and I attribute that to James' teaching style -- he gently recommended that I put all three boys in the pool with him, and he was right because they worked harder together than alone. Thank you James!

"Lorena is amazing with our 4-year-old. She has taught her how to swim and survive in just a few short weeks. She has been super flexible and accommodating with scheduling sessions. I am impressed by how she has taken a girl who was timid and apprehensive in the water to a water-loving mermaid. Our daughter calls Lorena her best friend. I highly recommend Lorena for your personal swim instructor!!" - Meghan F.

Coach Kelly was perfect for my 2 and 4 year olds. She worked on getting them comfortable with her, promoted fun activities that got them engaged, and improved their swimming all at the same time. Perhaps the greatest compliment is that my oldest went to a group swim lesson and told me she like "Ms. Kelly the best".
