The idea that children with Autism can not participate in swimming lessons or swim sports is an outdated perception.
With April being the month of Autism Awareness, it is important to shed light on all the benefits of at home swim lessons for children affected with Autism. We believe that if the child is willing, then they are able. We never put a limitation on our swim students.
Benefits of Swimming Lessons for Autistic Children
Physical Activity: Physical activity in the nature of swim lessons not only helps in overall health of the child, but it also can help to decrease repetitive behavior but also reduce the risk of heart disease and obesity in later adult life.
Social: At home swim lessons can provide a social outlet for a child with autism by acting as a positive social outlet with their instructor. This can help aid in other social interactions with the child.
Attention: Swim lessons and swimming can help to increase an autistic childâs attention span.
Dr. John OâConnor, associate professor of adapted physical education at Montana State University-Northern said, âPeople with autism experience levels of sensory perception that most of us wouldnât know or understand, exercise gives them the same benefits but it doesnât have the negative social connotations.â.
Exercise is an important element to any human beings life, a child or adult with autism should be no exception to the great benefits of physical activity through swimming!
